The sea is not one

by Rayya Badran

The videos and films assembled in this selection conjure disparate relations to the sea across different geographies. The poetic treatments of these films, however distinct, denote the centrality of the sea, the ocean, as spaces for unearthing singular songs of distant pasts and setting in motion the body's gestural work. The sea as a point of departure or arrival, as injuriousness and opacity, as container of ghosts never too far. And sometimes, it is but a background to the beginnings of teenage love by the pool.

This selection of videos and films is dedicated to the late Etel Adnan and the sea that betrayed.
